Historic Restoration - Folk Victorian complete with Wrap-Around Porch - James Hardie ColorPlus Boothbay Blue

The Historical Board Review of Readington Township went smoothly with the informal presentation of the Hardiplank Product by Four Seasons Ind., Inc. of Hopewell, NJ. Board members were very interested in the substitution of the Fiber Cement Product in lieu of the "New Growth Wood" which is known for premature failure.

This quaint gem of a home in the Historical Area of Whitehouse Station, NJ was in great need of restoration. Known in some circles as a Folk Victorian, this home exudes the care that was taken by the caretakers of this relic. Most of the trim was entirely serviceable.

This home did have issues that were screaming for a little tender loving care. The cedar deck was no longer holding traffic; the porch roof was leaking and causing the timbers and beams to rot. The siding was water damaged at the corners from the deluge of weather from the years of gutter ice spill-over.

The walls were hollow and the efficiency of the newly installed retrofit windows could hardly be realized because of the drafty, open wall cavities. The trim done by the window installers robbed the home of its charm. The trim details had been boxed and capped with aluminum by unknowing or uncaring workers. We did not realize the beauty that lied beneath the capping until we took it off and examined the wood, which was in very good shape, for the most part.

Folk Victorian - Whitehouse Station, NJ

We retrofitted AZEK Smooth PVC Trim to build out the original casings to maintain the reveals beyond our addition of ¾ Insulation Board. We insulated the walls and installed James Hardie ColorPlus Boothbay Blue Siding in Smooth 7-1/4 Clapboard in a 6” reveal. We scraped and painted all of the house trim white. This afforded a high level of contrast to the trim work which had been muted previously in beige. We roofed the porch with an SBS Modified Asphalt system and we highlighted the job with Copper Edging and Drains. We installed an ALCOA OASIS Composite Deck and Ribbon combination.

This was an historical restoration and it was a joy for our personnel to bring back this old home to a condition that is now better than before. This home is truly energy efficient and its beauty will last for a long time to come. Take a look at the photographs of the home before, during work in progress, and the end result. What a transformation!
