So, how does one go about reclaiming a Ludowici turn-of-the-century Roof? |
|
You start by dismantling the roof and bringing the tile to the ground! Some roofers build scaffoldings and stack the tile on the scaffolding leaving a dangerous situation for everyone! Do the job right - Call a professional!

We often assume as a species, that we are getting smarter and better as time passes. Why as roofers, and if this is true, have some of us forgotten some of the fundamentals of our trade? You will not believe this! The article available by clicking the image to the left has been taken down by its original host. |

We ask why.......why then, even when we can be informed by a leading society of Roofers; why would this information be removed from the internet? We think we know why. Liability or the potential for it could be a reason to take down good information. Whatever the reason, the information regarding the degradation of copper by cedar run-off has been removed, as you can read by clicking on the photo above.
The corrosive affect of cedar to copper has been known by roofers for well over two centuries. Never would you see copper flashings on cedar roofs of old. We have never flashed a cedar roof in copper, nor will we ever use copper on a cedar roof. It is a shame, but there are many jobs being done right now by others that will have cedar run-off onto copper, as you see depicted above.
The truth hurts and sometimes when those that are in the business and have made mistakes and enough of them have clout, they can quash the truth! It takes a non-roofer to look upon our trade with a unique perspective. We do not agree with everything Mr. Baerman states in his 2006 article; however he has taken an honest approach in his findings.
Fact: Cedar Acids will degrade Copper! Click on the image above and then try to find that information anywhere else on the web....
Much tradition has been passed down through generations of roofers, along with many seemingly lost tidbits of wisdom that seem to have been forgotten by the main-stream.
Are we regressing as a species??? |

"What is that," you ask? We are not here to paint any pretty pictures, nor is our purpose to lie to you, the consumer. There are actually idiots mixing metals like copper and aluminum on the rooftop! Yes it is happening right now! Click the image for the story. Again, we must be regressing as a species.... |

.....for the issues we bring up for discussion.
No one has had the guts to admit to us that they have flashed a chimney in mixed metals.
Several in the industry have raised concern however, for our contention that cedar degrades copper.
Our contention is simple to prove. All one has to do is to look up onto a cedar roof with copper valleys or flashings. It will be apparent where the water washes down a cedar roof onto copper flashings that there are areas that appear shining and almost new in the copper luster. This usually appears in streaks. The streaks are areas where the protective patina of the copper has eroded and the acid from the cedar is continually degrading the metal.
The next thing to do to verify our standing on this is to visit the website of the Cedar Shake & Shingle Buraea. Check out all specifications for metal flashings. Terne and even aluminum is mentioned, but no copper.
