| Change Orders “What is a change order?” you may ask. A Change Order is usually an addition to a contract. It usually is caused by the unforeseen uncovering of additional work not described in the original scope of work. If a contractor uncovers rotten wood that was not included in the original contract, for instance, replacement of the rotten wood is generally charged as an extra on the job. If these problems with jobs are a rare occurrence and not the norm, for a contractor, the transaction is probably an honest one. Some contractors, however, have these types of occurrences as a regular way of doing business. A sales associate visits a property and estimates a job at a reasonable rate, but leaves out the work that is later charged in the form of a Change Order. The unknowing consumer signs on for a job that later becomes far more costly than originally expected. Sometimes, these Change Orders can exceed the cost of the original contract by three or four times! There are companies that acquire a large percentage of their revenue by the improper use of Change Orders. Beware of Change Order language in a contract. Better yet – Take our Challenge.
